Frequently Asked Questions

Edited and reviewed by our editorial team. Answers are general information — not legal advice.

How much does it cost to apply for a green card?

Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status) costs $1,440 for most applicants, which includes the $1,140 filing fee and $85 biometric services fee. Children under 14 filing with a parent pay $950. Fee waivers are available for applicants with demonstrated financial hardship.

Can I get a fee waiver for USCIS forms?

Yes. USCIS grants fee waivers using Form I-912 for applicants receiving means-tested benefits (Medicaid, SNAP, SSI), those with household income at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines, or those experiencing financial hardship. Not all form types are eligible for fee waivers.

What is premium processing and how much does it cost?

Premium processing (Form I-907) assures USCIS will process your petition within 15 business days. It costs $2,805 for most employment-based petitions. If USCIS doesn't act within 15 days, your fee is reimbursed. Premium processing is available for I-129, I-140, and certain I-539 petitions.

How often do USCIS fees change?

USCIS updates fees periodically through rulemaking. The most recent major fee increase took effect in April 2024. Fees are published in the Federal Register and on the USCIS website. Always verify the current fee before filing.

Do I need an immigration attorney to file?

You can file most USCIS forms yourself, but an immigration attorney can help avoid costly mistakes — especially for complex cases like employment-based green cards, removal defense, or asylum. Many immigration attorneys offer free initial consultations.
